Welcome to DDREvolved.com

Postby tovus on Fri Sep 26, 2008 3:48 pm

I would like to start by saying a big thank you to all of the DDRExtreme.co.uk members who have stuck by the site whilst it was at an in-between stage, and a huge welcome to any new peeps who have decided to drop by and have a look around!

Why the name change??
I have recently changed our hosting package, and unfortunately as it is a US based company I was unable to use a .co.uk domain for hosting. Due to this I had to sort out a redirect for the ddrextreme.co.uk domain, and tbh it looked rather untidy how it did it - it felt cheap and nasty and not really something I wanted associated with the site we have built over the past few years.

Also, as a site, we have changed since the beginning of the forums in May 2004 - we have had numerous competitions, each time changing the structure to better them, creating a perfect home for some of the community's best simfile makers. Also, DDR as a whole has also changed from where it was back in the day, and due to how things have changed and how the site has grown up I wanted a name to try and embody this. Hence DDREvolved.com was born.

I know that this came as a bit of a shock to many, and I admit I failed with a couple of the redirects :wall: I hope that everyone will warm to it over time - as it is here to stay now and will be a huge backbone in getting the site back up to full function - and enable us to advertise and spread the word to gain new members and more activity.

What's gonna change now?
Well, the community feeling that we have here is what I want to keep - as I feel this is what makes this site special. If I can build from that and expand then that will be great. The site was made to get people of the same interest together and I built it with the members in mind - so please feel free to let us know what we can do to make it better - either new things, or tweeks to existing stuff. Or maybe even if there is something that you feel is pants - let us know why and what you feel could be done to improve and I will do my best to make it so!

You will have hopefully noticed a new portal by now - it is a bit of a basic portal - but it does everything we need! It fits in perfectly with the forums and is very user friendly, so I hope this will allow new visitors/members to find everything easily and entice them to stick around.

Competitions: The past, the present and the future:
Comps are what put us on the map - and that is something that will definately remain. In the past I have had to restrict downloads due to my hosting package limitations, however, I basically have no limits as far as storage space and traffic is involved - so all of our past competition packs will be re-uploaded for ALL MEMBERS to download.

Making a downloads page of some sort will be my next task - but for the moment they will all be listed in threads in a special forum.

Right, think that I've gone on enough for the moment. All I want to finish by saying is sorry that I've not been around much lately and sorta left the site to suffer with the just the forums and that pants homepage thing, but I have a lot of energy and more time now I've settled in my new house - and will be using a great deal of that to make this site even better. We have a perfect foundation to start from - the members, our community and our competitions, so it's only onwards and upwards!

UPDATE: Been changing a few things tonight - mainly the ranking system.

Well, when I say 'change' I mean 'got rid of', pretty much anyway.

In the past this ranking of Probationer -> Newcomer -> Apprentice -> Veteran was to limit our downloads to those that contributed most. However, with downloads available for everyone now I feel that emphasis does not have to be on these ranks, or the groups that I formed to sort them. SO you now no longer need to request to join a new group, as these will also be deleted (the start of our strip down of the site, getting rid of stuff that isn't needed!) - however, the rank graphics will still be present to show your level of activity on the forums. They will be as follows:

Probationer (You start on this) -> Newcomer (10-49 posts) -> Apprentice (50-99 posts) -> Veteran (100+ posts)

They may change in future, but at the moment are a good way to show respect to those who help to build the community. As with before a few more special ranks may be introduced as an added extra for certain members (eg comp winners, etc).

If you don't see a rank graphic presently it's due to the fact I had to reset a few graphics - but I will change those over the next week (if I haven't by then please poke me!)

Ahh, I see now. Now I don't ever need to question myself about my rankings.
Nice layout btw. :)

Portal looks awesome. Just what I'd hoped for. Good job.

OK, I see then. Now I got the reason why my poster rank went down from Veteran to Apprentice again. Need to contribute more for the site thru posting. (and of course, participating in simfile contests, etc. :P)

Yeah, agreed on that. It's been a long time since I saw the Portal, and it's better than before. Much snazzier.

Ahahaha, I need to visit more often, I had no idea about this until just now.

I love how the site has changed over the past while, although admittedly I just glance at it about once a month.

Congrats DDREV and the DDREV team, I can't wait for the new contests and stuff. The DDREX.co.uk contests are some of the most fun contests I've ever been in, and it's the only time I actually get real critique outside of smaller contests.

Keep up the good work you guys. :D

UPDATE

Played around with a few bits in teh forums over the past few days, deleted some, enamed others and combined a few. Anyone got any feedback in regards to how they are laid out now - still too many, more needed, different names, etc, etc. Always good to get some other opinions :)

Also, I've added a welcome box on the portal home page (with a basic site blurb) and an advertisement box - so we can have the banner for the latest competition or pack that we have launched. Looking into the code for the portal at the moment to see if it is possible to add multiple boxes on seperate pages - as that was one of the benifits with our old portal. If not it will be mainly forum driven for extra pages - but I'll probably make a download site up to deal with all of our simfiles, etc - just need to see what I can/can't do firstly!

The black font against the dark blue bg is a little hard to read on the welcome box, but everything else looks great. :D
