Downloads Database Cleanup

Postby tovus on Wed Feb 20, 2008 3:45 pm

As we are fast reaching the deadline for ReVISITED I wanted to check we had enough space to upload it, and found that in actuality we have only 128Mb left out of 8Gb of server space!!!

So due to that fact I am going to be doing a cleanup - basically taking all of the files off of the site and upping our contest packs again with all of their upgrades, etc added - so ULTIMATE versions.

To help me out with this process can all authors make sure they have backups of their own files (stuff they uploaded to member's directories) - I will be taking everything down at the beginning of March ready for ReVISITED.

Also, if anyone has updated one of their own files that is in a competition pack - please can they email it to me and I will update the pack accordingly.

Any questions just post in this thread. :D

I have an updated version of Libertine for World Tour, I sent it to you a long time ago for the update pack that never happened-- Do you still have it, or do you need me to send it again?

Is Dreamhost the same as 1and1? Because that's who we are with...

That Dreamhost package does seem quite impressive - does anyone have any experience with them? If they turn out to be a trusted host it may be worth me swapping to them - due to how bloody cheap they are! Plus then allof our files could be available to everyone - not limited (they offer 5TB a month to start with, then add 40Gb every week we're with them!!)

Thoughts/comments?

Go for it. Also, you'll save the site getting lots of crapspam from people who post repeatedly unintelligble mess just to access the downloads.

I've found them to be extremely reliable - the package is exceptional given the price and I would happily recommend them. However, I'm probably going to end up moving away away from them just even given the relatively low cost it's still a bit much for me personally, and I would happily sacrifice 90% of my bandwidth/disc space for a 50% monthly price cut. I currently have just under 300GB disc space and over 5.5TB of bandwidth per month.

My account with them expires in mid-July, so if you're interested I may be able to transfer the whole account over to you (which means you would get the two years of growth bonuses I've accumulated). I don't have a working computer to sit and research if that's cost-efficient for you at the moment, but it's something I'd be happy to discuss if you're interested.

They did have a "minor" cockup recently, by accidentally billing just about their entire client base for the whole of 2009, which then caused even more complaints when people didn't think they handled the issue seriously enough. They're human and they like to admit it, unlike some companies.

Welly, they start off with 500Gb of space now for new customers! It would still be overkill for us - but may mean we can expand the site quickly by adding all the files we have wanted to host and make the downloads more acessable for the masses to access our competitions and thus spread the word.

I was thinking of going for the option of a year for $119.40, which is just over

Blimey, the new package is better than what I have already! :)

Even if you have 25GB used up, it would still take 200 people to leech the entire site each month to exceed the bandwidth, and even then they simply charge you for excess bandwidth.

I think naota3k also runs off DreamHost, but when ITG PC was first being leaked they cut off some of his subdomains for severe bandwidth use (after all, thousands of people downloading the installer is going to cause chaos). I think you can set up bandwidth throttling in the unlikely event of it becoming an issue.

(PS They aren't paying me to sell to you, honest!)

As you can probably see at the moment, we are currently in the process of moving to a different host and a different installation of the phpBB forums, so we have taken our downloads database offline for the time-being.

Rest assured though that hopefully within the next week we will start to be able to provide downloads for all members of the site with no download restrictions, so please bear with us during this transition. ;)
